The Myth of the Dead: Realism in the Fantastic

11-02-2026

In many stories, death is merely a door to something else. In my world—there is no afterlife. When the light goes out, there is only nothing. But not everyone accepts this. Most cling to what Othar calls "The Eternal Lie"—the desperate belief that something awaits them on the other side. This lie is the foundation of the faithless, a shield against the cold reality that their existence is finite. In the mythic dark high fantasy universe of Akrysmir, Daughter of Alamar®, this truth defines the stakes of every battle and every choice.

Yet, in the shadows of this truth, exist beings who refuse to accept finality by any means necessary. They are not "undead" in the traditional sense; they are the result of power, coercion, and a ruthless will.

The Puppets: The Unliving

Forget about souls that cannot find peace. In this universe, the unliving are not souls imprisoned—they are biological hardware. A necromancer or a maner (magic-user) does not use prayers or spirits; they use raw magical will to animate flesh and bone. The unliving are puppets without memories or consciousness, crafted from the remains of those who once were. The Binder of the Unliving guards an entire dimension of these remains—an army on standby, ready to be pulled into the world as emotionless tools for his dominance.

The Illusion of Spirits: Pure Death Magic

In a world without souls, any sighting of a spirit, a ghost, or a lingering essence is not a "visitation." It is Death Magic. There are no trapped spirits or imprisoned people—there is no one inside the illusion. These are souless magical constructs, energetic projections designed to mimic the living. They are made of shadow or light and energy, designed to look like life where there is only a void.

The Living Shadows: Hunters of Vitality

Beside the physical puppets walk the Living Shadows. These are incorporeal entities of darkness, commanded by The Binder of the Unliving to drain the life from his enemies. They do not strike with steel; they siphon the warmth and magical energy directly from a living being. To encounter them is to feel the void itself reaching out to turn you into a cold, empty vessel.

The Cursed: Vampires of the Dark

Vampires in the Akrysmir series are not undead. They are living beings, but they are cursed. Through pacts with The Binder of the Unliving, they have achieved terrifying beauty and a near-immortal form. But the price is fatal. To keep their flesh young and their senses sharp, they must consume more than just blood; they thrive on the life force of unborn life.

They are parasites on the future, trapped in an existence where light does not exist. They are bound to the darkness, and in their world, there is no sunrise—only the eternal hunt for the life they have forfeited the right to possess.

Why this Harshness?

Because magic in The World is never free. There are no easy rescues. When my characters face the darkness, they do not face a legend—they face a physical, demanding, and dangerous reality. This is realism in the fantastic. It is the price of survival in a world where gods are creators, but never saviors.

Are you ready to face The Binder of the Unliving's army, or do you prefer the dreams found in the light?
